Cycle Coaching

Our Mission

We want every child to be able to ride a bike before they leave primary school. We offer learn to ride sessions to everyone (age 4+)  and want to give all children the opportunity to learn how to ride.

Our cycle coaching program is led by Hannah Escott (GB Cycling Team racer 2015-2018 and 2016 and 2019 Elite Women’s World 4X Series Champion).

Open Trail offers a wide range of cycle coaching for all ages (4+) and abilities. Whether you, or your school/community group, are learning to ride for the first time, looking to develop your skills, ride technical terrain or race we will have activities to suit your needs.

We can support your school, community group or business by providing a range of cycling activities:

BALANCE-ABILITY

The accredited Foundation Stage ‘Learn to Cycle’ programme for Reception and Year One children. We teach your 4–6-year-olds how to ride whilst developing their physical literacy skills with our fab fleet of balance & first pedal bikes! They’ll hop, jump and skip their way to earning their pedals with a healthy addiction to regular exercise! Many go on to ride standing up, one handed and play racing! They develop skills some 10-11year-olds would envy.

We currently provide Balance ability programs in over 20 schools, with 95% rebooking us year-on-year. All equipment is provided.

Contact us to get your school involved.

LEARN TO RIDE LESSONS

It’s time to ditch those stabilisers and pedal independently. We are “THE LEARN TO RIDE PEOPLE” we provide 1:1 lessons in the school holidays and small group lessons in schools, we specialise in provision for SEND children and young people, helping everyone enjoy the benefits of cycling.

SPECIAL REWARD DAYS

Reward your children/staff with a full day of cycling fun: from skill development to team challenges and races, our portable jumps at your school/community group or enjoy a day out at Burlish Bike Park. Whether on your premises or away we provide a day to remember that creates a real buzz about a special day or event!

Dr. Bike

A.K.A The Portable Bike Mechanic. Have one of our mechanics come to your site and safety check bikes. We check the tyres, brakes and gears, make small repairs or advise where large repairs are needed.

MAINTENANCE TRAINING

If you want to learn how to fix your bikes, or have a group eager to learn how we can provide the mechanics, tools and equipment to teach you. Such as fixing punctures, setting up brakes and adjusting gears.

How does it fit with Ofsted?

The New Common Inspection Framework covers four key areas.

Two of which are:

  • Personal development, behaviour and welfare
  • Outcomes for children and learners

From 2019 your school can now be recognised for how the curriculum provides opportunities for personal development independently of the way you deal with behaviour and pupil attitudes to learning, unlike in previous years. We help you provide evidence for these new areas of the Framework by using Forest School to provide personal development opportunities and work on the outcomes for children as individuals.

The October 2018 report on ‘Obesity, healthy eating and physical activity in primary school’ concluded that schools should focus on improving the things they are best placed to do, such as:

– providing ample opportunity for children to take physical exercise during the school day – with lots of opportunities to ‘get out of breath’

– teaching particular skills like how to cook or how to dance, or even how to ride a bike

If you would like to measure the progress of the children and young people on these programmes we can gather essential baseline information on the children such as confidence, behaviour, academic ability, relationships with others, and reassess these capabilities at the end.

Benefits of cycling

Fitness

Cycling is a great way to raise the heart rate and burn calories. Increased physical activity is an essential part of tackling obesity. Figures released by Public Health England (PHE) show over 36% of Year 6 children in the West Midlands/Black Country/ Worcestershire are overweight or obese in 2023 compared to 32.8% in 2016

Social Skills

Teamwork and helping each other to cycle, as a group, is a big part of the Open Trail ethos.

fun

Cycling can take you to new places, to meet new people, have adventures, learn new skills, and raise a smile.

YOUR WALLET

Save money on transport by using a bike. Young people can increase their independence without the huge expense of being a young diver.

CONFIDENCE

Everyone achieves something in Open Trail sessions, raising self-esteem and confidence.

Wellbeing

Cycling is a great way to increase positive moods and promote positive mental health. It can help to reduce anxiety and depression and can lead to greater travel independence.

The Environment

Help to support the environment by reducing your carbon emissions and pollution by cycling.
